Introduction
The basic purpose of this research is to construct a database and provide a Web service by compiling the Saemaeul Movement data in the period of the former President Park Chung-hee, which are being forgotten and disappearing, and to establish the foundation for in-depth thematic studies, such as daily life history, regional history, farmers/farming village development history, female life history, and factory life history. The necessity of this research can be found in two aspects, such as “the value of the data” and “the poor situation of data preservation.” The Saemaeul Movement data in the period of former President Park Chung-hee are highly valuable even for the world as seen in the application for UNESCO World Heritage registration, and domestically, it is also valuable in connection with the researches about various subjects, such as ① the promotion of the internal stability in the research during the Park Chung-hee period, ② the modernization of Korean society and formation of main agents of modernization, ③ the advancement of the researches on regional history and daily life history, ④ and other various subjects, such as female life history, farmers/farming village development history, and factory life history. Internationally, it produced various ripple effects, such as ⑤ the provision of knowledge and information for developing countries that attempt to apply the experiences of Saemaeul Movement to their countries, as seen in the current 169 Saemaeul Movement projects in a total of 27 countries that have been carried out so far from 2002 after international organizations, such as UNESCAP and UNWFT, adopted this movement to solve the problem of poverty in developing countries. Nevertheless, the Saemaeul Movement data has been very poorly preserved (neglected without being classified or organized) and the collected data or oral records owned by those who directly participated in the Saemaeul Movement are being forgotten, lost, and discarded. The most valuable data we cannot miss are the data derived from Saemaeul Movement. Among them, the personal data (diary, meeting records, household ledger, bank book, photo, daily record of production/circulation, oral experiences, essays, letters, and village development plan, etc.) possessed by the Saemaeul leaders can increase their value and understanding of their users only when they are accompanied by oral records of the Saemaeul leaders who produced the records. However, the number of those oral records are very much limited. Such reality of limited number of oral Saemaeul records suggests the practical necessity to carry out this research systematically and urgently. Under the auspices of the National Research Foundation of Korea (formerly the Korea Research Foundation), a total of 10,197 data from books, general documents, photo/films, archives, as well as pictures and drawings were derived and stored for this research. In order to efficiently store, maintain, and utilize these data, this study constructed a DB and retrieval system to search the Saemaeul Movement archives in the period of the former President Park Chung-hee for six months from December 2011 to June 2012. Through the intuitive navigation and Web searching machine, the prompt provision of information on various terminologies was made possible.
