The contents include not only the symbol system of the Royal rituals as the enthronement, harvest ceremony(郊祀), Royal Shrine rituals(宗廟), tomb of the emperor(陵墓), a royal tour(巡行), Fengshan rite(封禪), Mingtang(明堂), Piyong(辟雍) and observatory(靈臺) but also the private rites as ancestral memorials or folk religions. Furthermore, the things necessary for ritual such as music and dance, costume, a state coach, and royal standard are included.
The time frame of this study ranges from the ancient times to the Tang Dynasty. The data collection covered over literature materials, excavated texts which include inscriptions on bones and tortoise carapace, inscriptions on bronze ware, bamboo and wooden slips, Dunhuang manuscripts, and archaeological relics in form of illustration or photograph.
Expect Effect / Research Utilization
This study has significance as follows: Firstly, the study of history is expected to give importance to the new discovery and creation of cultures in the digital age. The centre of culture in the traditional era was Li-Yue(禮樂) culture, which expressed by various symbol system as such ancestral rites, structure, costume, royal standard, etc. Therefore, the data collection of ritual and symbol system of ancient China would be very useful to understanding not only the traditional history and culture of China herself but also the cultural original form of East Asia including Korea.
Secondly, the essentials of database are in search and categorization. The past historical materials were recorded on two-dimensional plane, while the synchronization of the builded database with a computer renders the materials to be instinct with life. In this database system, the items of search classification are classified into three categories as <'division of ritualcontents'>, <'division of periods'>, and <'division of material properties'>. To help even non-expert to the terminology of rituals for easy search, this database system is based on the context-aware grouping space and the easy regrouping according to subjects, that makes it possible to find the culture and reconstruct the history in a more stereoscopic and creative view by bailing out of the text-oriented conventional history study.
Finally, the past literature data had strongly tended to be monopolized by some specific class. Hence, in conventional style, a historian studied a past culture and his results were provided to the public unilaterally. In contrast, the recent data-based historical studies have converted the relation between a historian and the public into two-sided communication style. This change provides, both historian and the public concerned on history and culture can play a role on not only a consumer of historical study results but also a researcher easy accessing to original data and investigating directly. In conclusion, the significance of this study may be the enlargement of base and creation of new culture.
